What is submittal?
A submittal is the package of product information a contractor sends to a project’s engineer or architect for approval before installing the products. It includes manufacturer cut sheets, specifications and drawings for each item, and distributors often assemble submittals for their contractor customers.
How it works
If the submittal shows a product other than the one specified, the engineer decides whether to accept it as an equal. An approved submittal locks in what the distributor will supply, so the order has to match it.
Submittal example
After winning the electrical package, a contractor asks its distributor for submittals on the panels and fixtures. The engineer approves everything except one fixture, which has to be replaced with the specified model.
